STATEMENT FROM BRIAN GRIFFITHS ON THE FIRST BIRTHDAY OF THE BALTIMORE BANNER
Congratulations to the Banner on their first birthday. But this is no time of celebration for fans of journalistic integrity and independence of thought.
As you know, I was briefly a columnist for The Banner last year. My brief time ended there by doing exactly what I was hired to do: write from a conservative perspective. But I was undermined from the inside. Not only by the editorial side of the house, but also by "unbiased" reporters who attacked me and my work publicly, lied to management about my writing, and served as activists for left-wing causes.
This was not a surprise to anybody who knew the individuals who organized The Banner. The Venetoulis Institute for Local Journalism was formed by Democrats, for Democrats, to serve the needs of Democrats. Despite the personal assurances made to me by the late Ted Venetoulis himself, The Banner is not committed to unbiased journalism nor are they committed to presenting conservative viewpoints.
I look forward to a day when Baltimore has a competitive, major journalistic enterprise that is actually unbiased and presents both sides of the issues. But the creation of The Banner was not that day. We continue to wait until that day comes.
